OPERATION

SVIN/PVIN Overvoltage Protection

In order to protect the internal power MOSFET devices

againsttransientvoltagespikes,theLTC3646continuously

monitors the SVIN pin for an overvoltage condition. When

SVIN rises above VIN(OV), the regulator suspends opera-

tion by shutting off both power MOSFETs and resetting

the soft-start level. Once VIN drops to below the specified

rangeofVIN(OV),theregulatorimmediatelyrestartsnormal

operation.

Short-Circuit Protection

TheLTC3646isdesignedtowithstandoutputshortcircuits.

In this situation the part will source ILIM (approximately

1.2A) plus half the inductor current ripple. Since VOUT is

at or near 0V, the on-time will shorten and the off-time

will lengthen considerably, resulting in a lower switching

frequency.
