Application Information Important notice: Validation and testing are the most reliable ways to confirm system functionality. The application information is not part of the specification and is for reference purposes only. The DIO2186 amplifies the voltage developed across a current-sensing resistor as current flows through the resistor to the load or ground. The high common-mode rejection of the DIO2186 makes it usable over a wide range of voltage rails while still maintaining an accurate current measurement. 9.1. Basic connections The device should be positioned in close proximity to the current sense resistor, with the input pins (IN+ and IN-) connected to the current sense resistor using Kelvin connections. To minimize ground offset errors between the device and the analog-to-digital converter (ADC), the REF pin should be connected to the ADC reference input. When interfacing with SAR ADCs, it is recommended to filter or buffer the DIO2186 output before directly connecting it to the ADC. Figure 12. Basic connections 9.2. RShunt and device gain selection The accuracy of a current-sense amplifier is optimized by selecting the current-sense resistor with the largest possible value. Increasing the sense resistor increases the differential input signal for a given current, thereby minimizing the impact of offset voltage errors. Nevertheless, there are still practical constraints, for example, the resistor physical size and maximum allowable power dissipation will limit the maximum resistor value in some specific applications. The maximum current-sense resistor value based on the power dissipation budget can be defined by the equation: 2 MAX MAX Shunt I PD R (2) Where: PDMAX is the maximum allowable power dissipation in RShunt. IMAX is the maximum current that will flow through RShunt. Another constraint on the current-sense resistor value and device gain is involved with the power-supply voltage VS, as well as the device’s output swing-to-rail limitations.
