A system that requires more than ten PCI loads requires a PCI-to-PCI bridge to overcome the electrical loading limits laid out in the PCI Local Bus Specification 2.1. Since option card slots require two loads each, bridging is necessary on large and expandable systems. Furthermore, option cards using more than one PCI device require a PCI-to-PCI bridge to limit the load to the option slot.
