36 / 54 page  WM8608 Product Preview w PP Rev 1.5 March 2004 36 SOFT MUTE AND AUTO-MUTE The WM8608 has a Soft Mute function set by the SMUTE control bit. Figure 21 shows the application and release of SMUTE while a full amplitude sinusoid is being played at 48kHz sampling rate. When SMUTE (lower trace) is asserted, the output (upper trace) begins to decay exponentially from the DC level of the last input sample. The output will decay towards zero with a time constant of approximately 64 input samples. When SMUTE is turned off, the output will restart almost immediately from the current input sample, thus possibly causing a pop sound. This function is disabled by default.
