Oscillator Overview Inadditiontobeingthesourceofthemainsystemclocktheoscillatorsalsoprovideclocksources fortheWatchdogTimerandTimeBaseInterrupts.Anexternaloscillatorrequiringsomeexternal componentsaswellasfullyintegratedinternaloscillators,requiringnoexternalcomponents,are providedtoformawiderangeofbothfastandslowsystemoscillators.Thehighspeedoscillator optionsareselectedthroughtheconfigurationoptions.Thehigherfrequencyoscillatorsprovide higherperformancebutcarrywithitthedisadvantageofhigherpowerrequirements,whilethe oppositeisofcoursetrueforthelowerfrequencyoscillators.Withthecapabilityofdynamically switchingbetweenfastandslowsystemclock,thedeviceshavetheflexibilitytooptimizethe performance/powerratio,afeatureespeciallyimportantinpowersensitiveportableapplications. Selectingwhethertheloworhighspeedoscillatorisusedasthesystemoscillatorisimplemented usingtheHLCLKbitandCKS2~CKS0bitsintheSMODregisterandasthesystemclockcanbe dynamicallyselected. Theactualsourceclockusedforthehighspeedoscillatorischosenviaconfigurationoptions.The frequencyoftheslowspeedorhighspeedsystemclockisalsodeterminedusingtheHLCLKbitand CKS2~CKS0bitsintheSMODregister.Notethattwooscillatorselectionsmustbemadenamely onehighspeedandonelowspeedsystemoscillators.Itisnotpossibletochooseano-oscillator selectionforeitherthehighorlowspeedoscillator.TheOSC1andOSC2pinsareusedtoconnect theexternalcomponentsfortheexternalcrystal. |
