I/O Port Control Registers

EachI/OporthasitsowncontrolregisterknownasPAC,PBCandPDC,tocontroltheinput/output

configuration.Withthiscontrolregister,eachCMOSoutputorinputwithorwithoutpull-high

resistorstructurescanbereconfigureddynamicallyundersoftwarecontrol.EachpinoftheI/O

portsisdirectlymappedtoabitinitsassociatedportcontrolregister.FortheI/Opintofunctionas

aninput,thecorrespondingbitofthecontrolregistermustbewrittenasa″1″.Thiswillthenallow

thelogicstateoftheinputpintobedirectlyreadbyinstructions.Whenthecorrespondingbitofthe

controlregisteriswrittenasa″0″,theI/OpinwillbesetupasaCMOSoutput.Ifthepiniscurrently

setupasanoutput,instructionscanstillbeusedtoreadtheoutputregister.However,itshouldbe

notedthattheprogramwillinfactonlyreadthestatusoftheoutputdatalatchandnottheactual

logicstatusoftheoutputpin.

Pin-shared Functions

Theflexibilityofthemicrocontrollerrangeisgreatlyenhancedbytheuseofpinsthathavemore

thanonefunction.Limitednumbersofpinscanforceseriousdesignconstraintsondesignersbutby

supplyingpinswithmulti-functions,manyofthesedifficultiescanbeovercome.Forsomepins,the

chosenfunctionofthemulti-functionI/Opinsissetbyconfigurationoptionswhileforothersthe

functionissetbyapplicationprogramcontrol.

• ExternalInterruptInputs

TheexternalinterruptpinsINT0,INT1arepin-sharedwiththeI/OpinsPD4,PD5.For

applicationsnotrequiringanexternalinterruptinput,thepin-sharedexternalinterruptpincan

beusedasanormalI/Opin,howevertodothis,theexternalinterruptenablebitsintheINTC0

registermustbedisabled.

• ExternalTimerClockInput

TheexternaltimerpinsTMR0,TMR1andTMR2arepin-sharedwithI/Opins.Toconfigure

themtooperateastimerinputs,thecorrespondingcontrolbitsinthetimercontrolregistermust

becorrectlysetandthepinmustalsobesetupasaninput.NotethattheoriginalI/Ofunctionwill

remainevenifthepinissetuptobeusedasanexternaltimerinput.

• PFDOutput

ThedevicecontainsaPFDfunctionwhosesingleoutputispin-sharedwithI/OpinPA3.The

outputfunctionofthispinischosenviaaconfigurationoptionandremainsfixedafterthedevice

isprogrammed.Notethatthecorrespondingbitoftheportcontrolregister,PAC.3,mustsetupthe

pinasanoutputtoenablethePFDoutput.IfthePACportcontrolregisterhassetupthepinasan

input,thenthepinwillfunctionasanormallogicinputwiththeusualpull-highselection,evenif

thePFDconfigurationoptionhasbeenselected.

• PWMOutputs

ThedevicecontainsseveralPWMoutputssharedwithpinsPD0~PD3.ThePWMoutput

functionsarechosenviaregisters.Notethatthecorrespondingbitoftheportcontrolregister,

PDC,mustsetupthepinasanoutputtoenablethePWMoutput.IfthePDCportcontrolregister

hassetupthepinasaninput,thenthepinwillfunctionasanormallogicinputwiththeusual

pull-highselection,evenifthePWMregistershaveenabledthePWMfunction.

• A/DInputs

Thedevicecontainsamulti-channelA/Dconverterinputs.Alloftheseanaloginputsare

pin-sharedwithI/OpinsonPortB.IfthesepinsaretobeusedasA/Dinputsandnotasnormal

I/OpinsthenthecorrespondingbitsintheA/DConverterControlRegister,ADCR,mustbe

properlyset.TherearenoconfigurationoptionsassociatedwiththeA/Dfunction.IfusedasI/O

pins,thenfullpull-highresistorregisterremain,howeverifusedasA/Dinputsthenanypull-high

resistorselectionsassociatedwiththesepinswillbeautomaticallydisconnected.
