Watchdog Timer Operation

TheWatchdogTimeroperatesbyprovidingadeviceresetwhenitstimeroverflows.Thismeans

thatintheapplicationprogramandduringnormaloperationtheuserhastostrategicallyclearthe

WatchdogTimerbeforeitoverflowstopreventtheWatchdogTimerfromexecutingareset.Thisis

doneusingtheclearwatchdoginstructions.

Undernormalprogramoperation,aWatchdogTimertime-outwillinitialiseadeviceresetandset

thestatusbitTO.However,ifthesystemisintheSLEEPorIDLEMode,whenaWatchdogTimer

time-outoccurs,theTObitinthestatusregisterwillbesetandonlytheProgramCounterandStack

Pointerwillbereset.ThreemethodscanbeadoptedtoclearthecontentsoftheWatchdogTimer.

ThesecondisusingtheWatchdogTimersoftwareclearinstructionsandthethirdisviaaHALT

instruction.

TocleartheWatchdogTimeristousethesingle"CLRWDT"instruction.Asimpleexecutionof

"CLRWDT"willcleartheWDT.
