High Speed Internal RC Oscillator – HIRC

ThehighspeedinternalRCoscillatorisafullyintegratedsystemoscillatorrequiringnoexternal

components.TheinternalRCoscillatorhasafixedfrequencyof8MHz.Devicetrimmingduring

themanufacturingprocessandtheinclusionofinternalfrequencycompensationcircuitsareused

toensurethattheinfluenceofthepowersupplyvoltage,temperatureandprocessvariationson

theoscillationfrequencyareminimised.Asaresult,atapowersupplyofeither3Vor5Vandata

temperatureof25°Cdegrees,thefixedoscillationfrequencyof8MHzwillhaveatolerancewithin

2%.

Internal 32kHz Oscillator – LIRC

Theinternal32kHzSystemOscillatoristhelowfrequencyoscillator.Itisafullyintegrated

RCoscillatorwithatypicalfrequencyof32kHzat5V,requiringnoexternalcomponentsforits

implementation.Devicetrimmingduringthemanufacturingprocessandtheinclusionofinternal

frequencycompensationcircuitsareusedtoensurethattheinfluenceofthepowersupplyvoltage,

temperatureandprocessvariationsontheoscillationfrequencyareminimised.

Supplementary Oscillators

Thelowspeedoscillator,inadditiontoprovidingasystemclocksourceisalsousedtoprovide

aclocksourcetotwootherdevicefunctions.ThesearetheWatchdogTimerandtheTimeBase

Interrupts.

Operating Modes and System Clocks

Presentdayapplicationsrequirethattheirmicrocontrollershavehighperformancebutoftenstill

demandthattheyconsumeaslittlepoweraspossible,conflictingrequirementsthatareespecially

trueinbatterypoweredportableapplications.Thefastclocksrequiredforhighperformancewill

bytheirnatureincreasecurrentconsumptionandofcoursevice-versa,lowerspeedclocksreduce

currentconsumption.AsHoltekhasprovidedthedevicewithbothhighandlowspeedclocksources

andthemeanstoswitchbetweenthemdynamically,theusercanoptimisetheoperationoftheir

microcontrollertoachievethebestperformance/powerratio.

System Clocks

ThedevicehasdifferentclocksourcesforboththeCPUandperipheralfunctionoperation.By

providingtheuserwithawiderangeofclockselectionsusingregisterprogramming,aclocksystem

canbeconfiguredtoobtainmaximumapplicationperformance.

Themainsystemclock,cancomefromeitherahighfrequency,fH,orlowfrequency,fSUB,source,

andisselectedusingtheCKS2~CKS0bitsintheSCCregister.Thehighspeedsystemclockis

sourcedfromtheHIRCoscillator.ThelowspeedsystemclocksourcecanbesourcedfromtheLIRC

oscillator.Theotherchoice,whichisadividedversionofthehighspeedsystemoscillatorhasa

rangeoffH/2~fH/64.
