System Impact:
In case of persistent short-circuit faults, the device restarting into the short may result in excessive current flow
on the load side and cause damage to the circuits. It could also subject the LM73100 to stress beyond the SOA
limits and damage the device.
Workaround:
1. At lower supply voltages and/or in practical system conditions, multiple factors (the nature/location of the
short, power path inductance, power supply capacity, output capacitor) could prevent the current through the
power switch from building up to very high levels and prevent this scenario.
2. This effect is also less pronounced if there’s a load current of ~1 A through the device at all times when it’s
enabled.
3. While LM73100 can offer some protection against transient short-circuit faults, using an additional
overcurrent protection element such as a fuse in series would be advisable to handle persistent short-circuit
faults.
8.7.2 Device Behavior with IMON Pin Shorted to Ground
LM73100 provides load current monitoring as an optional function. This needs a resistor to be connected from
IMON pin to GND. Systems which don’t need current monitoring may choose to connect the IMON pin to ground.
However, this triggers an internal circuit which detects a fault when the IMON pin resistance to ground is lower
than ~100 Ω and turns off the device.
System Impact:
Device may turn off with IMON connected to GND.
Workaround:
Use a resistor of 150 Ω or higher from IMON pin to GND. In some applications, it may also need a zener clamp
on the IMON to prevent it from exceeding 1.8V during severe overcurrent conditions.
