81 / 523 page  CHAPTER 5 OPERATORS AND EXPRESSIONS User’s Manual U15556EJ1V0UM 81 (2) Address and Indirection operators Unary Operators & * <1> Unary & operator FUNCTION The unary & (address) operator returns the pointer of a specified object (i.e., the address of the variable it precedes). SYNTAX & operand <2> Unary * operator FUNCTION The unary * (indirection) operator returns the value indicated by a specified pointer (i.e., takes the value of the variable it precedes and uses that value as the address of the information in memory). SYNTAX * operand NOTE The operand of the unary & operator must be a left-side value referring to an object not declared with the register storage class specifier. Neither a function locator nor a bit field can be used as the operand of this unary operator. The operand of the unary * operator must have a pointer type. |
