Application Information

5.6.1 AutoNegotiation at Power Up

When the device is powered up the AutoNegotiation algorithm must

handshake with the remote device to conﬁgure itself for a common mode

of operation. To insure smooth and proper AutoNegotiation operation at

power up it is recommended that the procedure outlined in Table 5.4 be

followed.

SD is not used, go to the next step.)

Waits for valid data from the optical transceiver.

Set RST bit in Register 7

Resets the device.

Set bits [15:0] in Register 21

Sets up the capabilities for AutoNegotiation.

Set the remaining

Sets up the device for the desired operation.

Set ANRST bit in Register 7

Restarts AutoNegotiation.

Wait > 50

Wait for AutoNegotiation to complete.

Read LINK bit in register 11 twice. If

0, then done. If 1, repeat #5–7

(up to seven times).

Determine if AutoNegotiation done and link pass. If

link pass, device ready for operation. If link fail, retry

again seven more times. If no link pass after seven

times, disable ANEG and try manual link pass.

Clear AN_EN bit in Register 9

Disable AutoNegotiation.

Clear ANRST bit in Register 7

Clears all internal AutoNegotiation circuitry.

Wait > 100

µs

Wait for manual link pass.

Read LINK bit in Register 11 twice.

If 0, go to ﬁrst step. If 1, done.

If manual link pass, then device ready for operation. If

link fail, then redo procedure until link pass is

achieved.
